EMDR Therapy
Heal from Trauma and Find Peace with Evidence-Based Care
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a powerful, evidence-based treatment designed to reduce the emotional burden of traumatic memories. By combining focused attention on distressing thoughts with bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements—EMDR helps the brain reprocess traumatic events and reduce their psychological impact.
At Innervisions Recovery Center, EMDR is integrated into our holistic, individualized treatment programs for those dealing with trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and substance use. Our goal is to help you move beyond painful memories and rediscover inner peace, clarity, and emotional balance.
Understanding EMDR Therapy
Proven Trauma Treatment for Long-Term Emotional Relief
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a highly effective, structured treatment approach that helps individuals reprocess and heal from emotionally charged memories. Originally developed to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), EMDR has since evolved into a versatile therapy used to address a wide range of psychological challenges.
At the core of EMDR is the understanding that unprocessed traumatic experiences remain “stuck” in the brain’s neural pathways, often triggering anxiety, fear, or emotional distress long after the event has passed. These memories can be reactivated by everyday situations, leading to overwhelming emotions, intrusive thoughts, and dysfunctional behaviors—especially when left untreated.
How EMDR Works
EMDR follows a structured, eight-phase protocol that begins with history taking, treatment planning, and preparation. Once a target memory is identified, the therapist guides the client to recall the distressing memory while simultaneously using bilateral stimulation—such as side-to-side eye movements, auditory tones, or tactile tapping.
This bilateral stimulation is believed to activate both hemispheres of the brain, mimicking the natural processing that occurs during REM sleep. As the memory is reprocessed, its emotional charge is reduced, and clients begin to associate the memory with more adaptive thoughts and feelings. Over time, the memory loses its power to trigger distress, enabling individuals to heal at the root level—not just manage symptoms.
